ID this large iron buckle
« on: May 21, 2013, 06:30:28 PM »
I dug this large iron buckle,  approx. 2 1/2" by 1 3/4 "  with a visible roller.  Can anyone ID this?  It was found in an area in VA where there was a cavalry battle.  Could it be from a carbine sling, belt, or horse strap?

Too small for a carbine sling, and they are usually brass.  Could be from a harness, but probably not military.

we find those once in a while around house sites and consider them to be harness buckles. We base that on some old junk my grandfather had for hooking to his mules that looked very similar.
