The C. S. Broun Fuze and Shells;
« on: October 24, 2012, 01:06:00 PM »
To All Interested;
     The C. S. Broun Percussion Fuze is a neat little fuze and consists of a copper plate with a central hole accomodating a lead inertia pellet with a serrated metal tab attached and embedded in a friction sensitive mix.  The pellet is held in place on the copper plate by two crossed paper strips glued to the plate.  The copper plate assembly is held in the shell body by a screwed in closure cap.
      At impact the lead pellet breaks free of its paper restraints, pulling the serrated tab through the friction mix which produces a flame to ignite the main filler.   The slightly domed cap serves more to close and secure the plate assembly rather than as an anvil.
      It must have been a reliable fuze as not many have been found.
     My sincere thanks to eMike for the fuze and shell images and to Pete George for providing me with  the construction details of the fuze.  Sorry it took so long Pete to publish.
Regards,
John
