picked up (purchased-extremely cheap) a relic condition, probably VERY early battlefield pick up/barn find, Sharps carbine. missing the lever and trigger. trigger was broken off, part still remains. wood stock still present, wooden forearm 40% present. I got it home and lo and behold it has a name, faintly inscribed on the stock 1st line "S. Stone" 2nd line " co. B 17th Pa."
Stanley Stone enlisted into Company B of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry and remained there untill his capture in December of 1864, He had been promoted to corporal in November 1864. I will try to add a few pictures later.

Congratulations and way to start the new year! This is the kind of story that really makes this hobby fun.
-
Way to go, man! Very cool.
-
you need to do some more research (as I will also) to see when the 17th would have received Sharps carbines. As of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, the 17th PA Cav. did not have any of these. Can you supply the serial number?
-
Wow, you know how to crush ones heart. LOL. I will pull it out in a little bit and get the number.
-
serial #88150 if you have more info, please aadvise. I appreciate it.
-
Good news..........
By June 30, 1864 the 17th PA Cav did have 235 Sharps carbines. By 1865 that number increased to 467.
Only Co. E of the 17th has a list of serial numbered Sharps for the company. But a s/n of 88,150 falls within the range of the weapons listed for them.
So, good find!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
-
My guy was in company "B" you said company "E" had the sharps or did I read that wrong.
-
Yes, you read it wrong :o
The regiment had Sharps by the end of the war. But only Co. E left us a written record of names and serial numbers. However, those listed run up in to the 89,000 range. So yours (from Co. B)fits right into that range.

ok, thanks. I wish it would have been around for more of the battles but i will take what i can get. is this a model 59 sharps or a different model?
