Holy Grail
« on: April 29, 2012, 07:33:52 PM »
I thought it would be fun to start a thread that everyone could participate in, so I pose this question... What is your Holy Grail of artillery projectiles? Assuming you could locate one to acquire, and money wasn't an issue, what is the ONE piece you would add to your collection right now? Or maybe you're even lucky enough to already own it.

I have to say for me I'm particularly fond of the 7in. James Bolt, and my collection won't seem complete until l I get one. So what is yours?

I don't know that I have any one shell.  No doubt the 6.4 Archer that Mike covets would be very near the top for me too.  There are a handful of others:
  • 3-inch Brooke with rebated body
  • 3.8-inch Read Percussion Shell for James Rifle
  • 3.67-inch Finned Archer
  • 3-inch Archer with Bormann fuse
  • 3.8-inch Read Percussion Shell for James Rifle
There are others on my wish list but off the top of my head this is a good start.

Good topic.

Seeing as you listed the 3.8-inch Read Percussion Shell for James Rifle twice, that must be the one.  Hands off my 6.4in Archer!

Lol trust me Mike I see that in my sleep... Like I said, if money wasn't an issue... Sigh.... But hey maybe you and Carl could get joint custody of a 6.4in archer and alternate weekends?

A 20-inch ball would be a good one.  I don't even recall seeing one before.  I can't imagine moving one of those around given how hard a 15-inch is to move.  It would be impressive!

8 inch Schenkl, nice condition any variant.
5.1 or 6" Hotchkiss
6" Dahlgren Blind Shell
8" Parrott Short Bottle Top Bolt
10" Parrott

If the 15" Dahlgren weights 330lbs, what does the 20" Rodman weigh?

1,000lbs?  My nuts are hurting just thinking of trying to move it.  I've always thought about buying a 15" Dahlgren, but just moving my 11" Dahlgren hurts my aging body.  Round balls are hell to move.
