Hello Pete,
Happy almost New Year.  I was going to say that it resembles the shell you identified as a Burton which I now believe we all call a Dyer.  Below is the image I lightened with some call outs added.
Kind Regards,
John

maybe this will help if its a 3.4" dyer. the inside diameter of your ring( and outside of my shell's base flange) where it slipped off the shell would 2.859 or 2 55/64"

Alwon,
is there a distinct groove on the shell body where the sabot begins?  I think you have a winner there. There appears to be 6 vertical indentations.
Kind Regards,
John

Natdigger, just for clarification, I was asking about the ridges which run "vertically" down from the sabot's top to its bottom.  One of them shows in your first photo at the tip of your finger.  Are there only two of those? Or are you talking about ridges which encircle the sabot at its edges?

Because Natdigger says it seems to have three faint lands-&-grooves rifling marks, it may have been fired from a CS 3.4" Reamed-&-Rifled 4-pounder Smoothbore.  I say "may" because that cannon's rifling grooves are the same width as its lands.  (Lands and grooves are each approximately 1.75" wide.)  Is that what you see on this sabot, Natdigger?

Regards,
Pete

Alwon,
If it is not the same shell I have one in my hard drive.

It has 5 vertical grooves. So I think we have a winner. Not a bad pick up for 25 bucks. 😀

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. I was amazed when I saw it. Because the place I got it from, their pictures made it look like a hotchkiss sabot. WAY BETTER than a hotchkiss sabot.

I know the shells say rarity 10, but how rare are these shells really? I see rarity 9 shells all the time.

Pretty uncommon as the thread on them we had would indicate.  Aside from the 2 I sold here last year, have you ever seen another available?
