Oddly, that shipping plug looks identical to the shipping plugs found with the 12 pound studded Armstrongs on the retreat route. I can't take a photo now, but wonder if they used a common plug for all shells.

Scott,
No common plug for all shells.  A friend sent me a collection of all sorts.  Unfortunately he didn't tell me what shells all were used in.
Regards,
John

Thanks Mike.  So no markings on yours?  Is that a flat or stepped bottom?

John

1.14" dia. x 14tpi.

Close to some Schenkl fuses (navy percussion and one of the combination fuses which are 1.12 x 14tpi).  Maybe it was intended to take them or maybe someone can find another fuse that fits.

Thanks Mike.  Same tpi as the adapter and plug in the spherical shell in my drawing.
So many British fuzes so few dimentions. I wonder why no fuzes were recovered from the sinking?
same view with plug removed would be even better.

John

I looked at the big whitworth from the Ella on display at fisher's museum on Friday.  The plug in it is identical to the one emike posted.
