NC, I can give you some quick MM/TT-Mason and McKee/Thomas and Thomas identification numbers and names but I will be leaving for work in a few minutes and will have to wait to provide cavity information on bullets.

I do recommend you pick up the TT Handbook, "A Handbook of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges" for identification. It is a great handbook for the price.

1. and 7.  Union machine pressed bullet - MM-284 through 288/TT-188 a-f. Extreme ground action on #1 base looks carved with ground action on 7. Known as a Prussian in the MM.
2. and 6.  Williams Cleaner Type III - MM-540/TT-159. Union made.
3. Pressed and turned union bullet with spokes in the base. MM-344-348/TT-153.
4. Confederate Gardner - MM170/172 or TT-162c.
5. Sharps, Union - MM-467/TT-110
8. MM-328/TT-186a. 69 caliber Rifled Musket. You will hear some folks refer to this style bullet as "ja3r" Just another 3 ringer.

NC,

I would recommend firstly that you get at least the Thomas and Thomas handbook as it's a wealth of info for not much money at all.  That way when people reference those numbers you'll be able to see details on what they are referring to.  While not as accurate or complete, the Mason and McKee book is also a must have if you are going to collect bullets since there are so many references to that book being it was the origional.

I don't know of an online internet reference site but others here might.   Jack Melton hosts a Civil War artillery site (http://www.civilwarartillery.com) that would server any novice collectors need.  I'm surprised there isn't an equivalent for bullets but perhaps the leadheads here will chime in and point me to one that I somehow never got exposed to.

You can scan bullet commerce sites such as:
    - http://www.americancivilwarrelics.com/Civil%20War%20Bullets.htm  (Ian Workman's site)
    - http://www.tennesseelead.com/index.html (Ken Price's site)
which carry a large selection of bullets and will probably find a good example of what you are looking for.  They include measurements, etc. along with good images.

Hope this helps.
Best,
Carl

Here's an online reference from very infrequent forum member Tom Henrique:
