marshal Shell help
« on: February 12, 2016, 05:59:45 AM »
hi, picked up this shell, believe its a 3.3" Marshal. my dia tape shows it right at 3.3?, my caliper puts it at 3.29 for the iron, sabot should be bigger, so seems really tight. weight is 10 lb 4 1/2 oz. I thought when I bought it from the pictures it had the large lathe Dimple, but instead it has a huge cavity in the base. The cavity is 1" at the opening, at least 1 1/4" diameter inside and 5/8" deep. leaves about 3/4" of shell thickness to the charge cavity. is this just a sprew casting flaw?dimple like I've see on early British shells, or did it serve a purpose? Hard to see if its a flaw how the sides stayed up enough to form the base knob

was this shell ever lathe turned, and how would you mount it to do it?
