Flock of Dahlgrens
« on: October 20, 2014, 05:54:33 PM »
Some Dahlgrens, a couple of which I have not shared pics of here before.

Leftmost is a 3.4in one for the boat howitzer.  Next to it is a spiral one of the same caliber fished out of a Federal test range.  The big one is a 6.4in CS one recovered near Spanish Fort.  A sabot for it is beside it.

Very nice.  That CS Dahlgren is hard to come by.  I've never seen or heard of the spiral one before.
Best,
Carl

I wondered if you had one of the real rare one, a 3.25 Dahlgren Confederate. I have only seen two. Tom had one from Port Hudson and my nephew found one in the river at Selma. There are probably several around but I rarely go to shows or see other collections.

Carl,
Which one is C.s. and what features make it one?

The CS Dahlgren is the large one in the top right of the image.  There is no slope to the raised panels on the side of the shell compared to the US ones which have a slight angle to them.  But the biggest indicator is the undoubtedly CS fuse in the nose.

Carl

Carl,
It must be my low vision but I don't see a fuzed shell.

Steve:  Mike doesn't have a small CS version shown in his image; only the 6.4-inch version.  I've never actually seen a 3.25-inch example that I recall.  The 3.25-inch CS Dahlgren is shown on page 384 of the 1993 Edition of Dickey and George where they are reported to be from Port Hudson.

John: If you click on my image it will enlarge so you should be able to see the fuse.

For an image of Mike's CS Dahlgren with the sabot see:
         http://www.civilwarartillery.com/hap/page96.htm
Mike's version has a more rounded nose and is in much better condition but otherwise is the same.

Chris,
After moving your image into my software I am able to see the fuze and the bearing strips. Sorry for repeating your post but perhaps all can see a little better. have you seen a fired shell with the sabot in position?
John
P.S. Mike I am real interested in seeing what the sabot stripping did to the base anti-rotation tabs.

Is that some type of "Folk Art" on the lighter colored 3.6" Dahlgren?

Mike,
Great looking projectiles. Did both sides use a 4 inch projectile of this type? It is also interesing that the federal patent illustrates straight ribs.
