Clinton & Port Hudson RR
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:26:57 PM »
Back in April I was fortunate enough to find a small segment of Rail from the Clinton & Port Hudson RR, established in 1833. Fortunate that it was only a 5" segment instead of an 8' rail. I have finally cleaned it.

The rail road suffered frequent derailments. I think you can see why..........

I love it.  Screams Southern make do.  I asked Ronnie to find me a short piece like that but all he has are the 8 footers!.  Apparently in addition to not having much lateral support, they were prone to bend upwards lengthwise like an old Sylvester the Cat cartoon when he'd step on the end of a board and the other end would pop up.

Congrats, John and Merry Christmas to you and the Honey Badger.  We missed you two at Franklin but I know well how ice storms debilitate Dallas.

What a cool relic.  I agree with Mike that it "Screams Southern make do".   It's one of those relics that when you see it you know where it is from.  Do you reckon the short piece was a trim piece from a rail patch?

Merry Christmas and hope to see y'all soon.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The piece looks like it was broken to me. Your guess is as good as mine! Its not a
clean cut. It appears that they folded it over on itself to form the track. Not sure how they
could keep it as uniform as it is.

I will mount on a piece of crosstie from the railraod near my house.

RJ - will be down your way I hope in late January. Would like to visit if you are available
when I come.

Hated missing the Franklin show, but Dallas was shut down for about 4 days.
