C. S. Archer Safety Pin Fuze with adapter
« on: August 14, 2012, 11:13:37 AM »
To All Interested;
Below is my rendering of the subject fuze drawn from a real image.
Can someone tell me how and why this fuze was named Archer? Any reference?
Additionally, which fuze would also fit the 7 inch Brooke when the fuze adapter is removed? Thread diameter and TPI?
Regards,
John

Thank you sir, I see Bell's reference to Brook's papers in the intro to Archer shells.  I have asked Jack to send me a PDF of the particular section in the Brooke paper that applies to Robert Archer.
Thanks for reminding me of Bell's reference.
Regards,
John

The bushing is the standard one that also accomodates a watercap fuse.  In seaching for a tap to chase the threads, the closest one we have found is a metric size. The #s escape me at present but Carl may be able to provide them. I gave them to Pete a couple weeks back also

Such a bushing could accept watercap fuses or several of the Archer percussion type fuses.  There is no single fuse for a 7" Brooke. They can also be configured without a bushing and a Brooke time fuse adapter like the one of mine you drew a couple weeks ago

The tap needed to chase the center of the water cap bushing is N22 x 15.  A bolt with this thread size is also good for making electrical connection for electrolysis or for suspending the shell in the tank.
Best,
Carl

Thanks Mike.  The time fuse adapter was the answer I was looking for.  Do you have the thread dia. and TPI of it?

John

Carl,
Are you sure the tap isn't  M22X1.5  This would be 22mm with 1.5 pitch (fine threads)

Mike,
you sent me the Brooke fuse.  Its thread dia and TPI is the same as the Archer fuse bushing.
Can you send me both?

6lbgun,

Good catch.  Sorry for the typo.  I had cut-n-pasted that from a spreadsheet I was keeping track of  them in and had a typo.  I've fixed my spreadsheet.
Best,
Carl

Gentlemen -

As long as you're doing a "Show & Tell" on a safety pin Archer fuze let me show you one just "outed" from a very old Alabama collection.  The bushing has some scuffs but the fuze is unblemished.  The plug is tight and has never been removed.

Needless to say it is spoken for but the remarkable part is that it was "unknown" until about a week or 10 days ago.  These were made in Selma, and perhaps other locations although I'm not the one to answer the question about "other locations".

Just thought I'd try to add something to cuz'in Bart's wonderful drawings.  Bart, thanks again for all that you have added to our catalog of images.  I point out your good work whenever I present one of my several power point talks.
