Good Morning Dave the Plumber,
Below is a birds eye view of your fuze in the 3 inch Arrick "Eureka" shell.
Enjoy,

John,
Nicely done. As you know, I've seen David's fuse and you represented it well.

Thanks for sharing that impressively detailed illustration, John.
Also, for reminding us older folks here what shell it has been found in.
Regards,
Pete

The "N" fuze was the last nose fuze (hence the "N" designation) designed by Frankford Arsenal for use in muzzle-loading black powder charged shell.

So it's safe to say the stamping on the nose signifies:
N = Nose Fuse
FA = Frankford Arsenal (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankford_Arsenal
)
95 = 1895
Is the year the model year of the fuse or the manufacture year?

Not quite. "N" was the name of the fuze. During this period there were "A", "B", "C", "F", "M", "12M", and "S" fuzes. All made by Frankford Arsenal. The model and year of manufacture are the same. There is also a Model 1900.

Joe,
Can you post an image of the model 1900?

Joe,
It is basically the same. I notice the sleeve does not have to travel very far to the base of the plunger.
Neat, thank you. Could you send me one?

John

Interesting. The striker and primer set up are very similar to the 1881 Hotchkiss Base fuses.

Bullets,
I believe Franfort Arsenal also made the Hotchkiss series, Joe will know for certain. The "ring resistance" fuze was used both nose and tail with a mnor arrangement of the charge.
Cheers,
john
