My balls.....
« on: October 03, 2012, 02:13:11 PM »
My finds from our recent hunts up in New England...1779 site.

Three 12-pdrs (1 w/ broad arrow), one 6-pdr, one 1-pdr, grapeshot, ax heads, pot hook.

I dug an additional 12- and 6-pdr, but gave them over to the landowner.

Nice "souvenirs!"  Glad you kept at least one of each size you found.

Here's Dean's haul.  Two 12s, two 6s, a 4, a 2, grapeshot, ax head, musket balls.  Note the broad arrows on the top three.

Additionally, Dean left a 12, 6, and 4-pdr as well as an ax head with the land owner.

Looks like y'all went hunting in a museum's storage room to me!  What a haul!  Congratulations.  Good to know people are still getting it out of the ground.
Best,
Carl

These are from a 1779 battle site.  Cleaned using zinc & lye.  I have pics of them in their crustier condition still in the ground, but am having trouble posting pics today.

Jim, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, please precisely measure the 4-pdr, 6-pdr, and 12-pdr. balls' diameter and exact weight.  In past checking, I've found that some RevWar cannonballs are a bit smaller in diameter than Civil War era ones.  So, I'm curious to know the precise measurements of yours, because coming from you, their 1779 provenance is rock-solid.

Regards,
Pete

Jim,              from the photo's posted of the balls in situ, it looks like you worked for your iron !!   That's digging through and around alot of roots. Not an easy task. How many days were you there ??
