Unlisted Nose Cast Minie from Forrest's 1862-63 Camps
« on: May 24, 2012, 09:57:30 PM »
I know of 25-30 Minies like this that have been recovered from Forrest's 1862-63 Camps in central Tennessee.  I can not match it to anything in M&M, Thomas, or Stelma references.  It is nose cast.  Those in my collection average .890 x .550, with a slight bit of variation each wan.  It has a deep conical cavity and relatively thick skirt walls.  THoughts on this one??

Those are a cool Minie, Jimmy.  I have always thought them to be CS too and I know ETEX thinks so too.

It is somewhat similar to what Skip and Meigs labled a Baby Austrian, but not quite.  I don't believe it is in a book, but ETEX, Terry, PIA or Skip can chime in.  I have seen quite a few in the Trans Miss, including a few Terry had and Gary had some too. There were 4 in the recent batch I got from Holly Springs, MS and Brian Riehl grabbed two of them from me at Mansfield and I kept two.  Hopefully the next group I am getting next week contains some more.

Wow, price must've been low because they sold within 45 minutes of me posting that.  If any of the regulars want to get one assuming there are some in my next batch, drop me a line.

Jimmy, I can't prove it with documentation but the bullet has got to be Confederate. I have seen them from Holly Springs, Corinth, and Grenada. What is the largest diameter that you have found in this bullet? Sorry for the delay in answering but I am on a grueling work schedule at the time. In fact a beautiful day here in East Texas and a Memorial Day to boot and I am heading in to work. Oh yea got to work Saturday and Sunday also. My next scheduled day off is the Sunday before July 4th. Guess I shouldn't complain I have a job. Hope to be posting more in the next couple of days but it's tough with this schedule.

On the ones in my collection, the diameters range from .535 to .555.  I have two that measure .555.

I know of this bullet being recoved the the Shiloh/Corinth area as well.  I agree with you - I believe it is a CS bullet.

I understand about work during holiday weekends - happens to me from time to time as well.  Look forward to more of your posts!

Mine I was discussing were 0.59" in diameter.  I just got 3 medium sized Priority Mail  boxes of bullets and other stuff in yesterday and have 2 of the 0.59" ones (definitely larger than 0.58 -- may be why they were discarded) left plus another with a boo boo on the nose.  I set aside one for dlw1610 and another for ETEX, but still have 2.  I also have one or two of the smaller ones -- I suppose they are for 54 caliber.

After considerable deliberation and looking through reference books, I believe the ones I pictured at the start of this post are either .54 or more likely the .55 Austrian shown in MM 415.  Measurements and cavity are pretty much dead on for it.

Mike, sent you an e-mail regarding your previous post

The 54 caliber ones like that I had look to be MM426 or 432

One perfect one of the 59s left and one with a small boo boo on its nose....

As me mentioned above, they are similar to the Baby Austrian in Meigs' War in the West NSTCW article.  Not sure if There is another article out there.

All mine are spoken for by the way.
