Description:I got this at Franklin directly from the digger. It is a one piece Parrott percussion fuse. This type with the narrower diameter bottom section is intended to fit the older Parrott shells which had a shelf to hold the slider for the unreliable two piece Parrott fuse. Subsequently, Parrott shells were made without this shelf in the fuse hole and most of the percussion fuses do not have the rebated bottom section. That feature makes this a fairly uncommon type to find. While it was a transitional pattern, in the Atlanta Campaign the Federal army was scraping the bottom of the barrel for artillery projectiles and so used these older ones in 1864.
