Location Recovered: Probably Mare Island, CA

Description:It is hard to find a watercap fuse stamped with one R, much less two. This means this fuse went out on at least 3 long sea voyages to have returned and been reloaded twice. It is likely this came from Mare Island, CA where upon its final cruise, the fuse was unscrewed from a shell and unceremoniously tossed in the river, only to be dredged up in the '30s when the river was deepened for submarine traffic. Has desirable early war 1862 date. Tough to find fuse, complete and in perfect shape.
