Description:The Bormann fuse was a top secret invention, and the Confederates could never get theirs to work properly. Accordingly, in late 1862 orders were issued to stop using them. Because a lot were already made along with shells with the corresponding size fuse holes, the Selma arsenal retrofitted the on hand stock to accept paper time fuses. The Bormann fuse and underplug were drilled out and the underplug was punched in several places I think to prevent it from spinning during the drilling out process. See page 27 of Chuck Jones' fuse book.
This is a tough pair to find and another fuse I don't mind keeping if it doesn't sell. I have had it for 3 years already as it came out of the large Spanish Fort area cache we got 3 years ago this month.
Update: Pete George suggested I remove the clay in the center hole and so I have added 3 pictures of it after performing this operation. There is indeed a hole!
