Description:This is an expensive fuse because they are not often found made of brass which the US Navy preferred (the more common zinc types having proved unsatisfactory). This carefully cut cross section shows how the fuse worked. The somewhat cockeyed striker probably shows why it didn't work as well since this one got stuck askew and didn't slide forward to strike the underside of the anvil cap.
