Description: 1 5/8" diameter -- very big as can be judged by the penny used for scale in the photos.

These were underplugs for big naval balls, most of which were case shot. It is believed the oversized plug allowed larger case shot balls to be loaded into the shell, but also we know some of these were used in place of a Bormann fuse to effectively turn the shell into a non explosive shell for smashing.
