Description:This is a rare fuse in top condition. It has perfect threads and even the leather gasket is intact. The bottom of the extension tube is present and often those have come off because they were tack soldered on. The patent information letters and numbers on the head of the fuse are crisp. The anvil cap is in the safe position still and the slider set screw is in place so it is unfired.
Although no provenance was provided, fuses of this very uncommon type have been recovered near the former site of the Mare Island Ammunition depot so perhaps this is one of those. It also appears to have been a water recovery.
The thinking is the extended bursting charge was helpful in the very large shells that used this otherwise highly effective fuse. Aside from the bursting charge, this is a standard field pattern, not the larger Navy pattern. It also has the smaller lettering, but ones with the larger lettering have also been recovered.
