Description:Mint condition 1862 dated watercap fuse that will screw into a shell. Centercap also will unscrew.

It is believed the R mark is for "reloaded.' After ships came in from a cruise, the paper fuses inside would be replaced in case they had been ruined by exposure to the sea air.

These are not common but batches have been recovered in Florida and California. I was unable to find out exactly where this one came from. I have a couple other war era dates of these for the same price.
