Description:Early pattern watercap fuse designed by Cyrus Alger and used with effectiveness, but phased out in favor of Algers improved 1857 pattern U.S. Naval Watercap Fuse. These are found in Columbiad Shells from early war sites. Some were captured by the Confederates when they overtook the US forts in their states at the beginning of the war.
This particular fuse was fired from the USS Tyler or Lexington in an 8in ball and though slightly distorted from the detonation, the watercap is completely intact. Dug on the Tennessee River near Eastport, MS.
