Description:Marked NP Ames, Cabotville, 1848. This is the last year of the Mexican- American War and after this not much was going on until 1861

I believe the blade is covered in dried Cosmoline, a brown wax-like petroleum-based corrosion inhibitors used by the military back then. This should clean up very nicely and fairly easily.

Nice brass hilt and leather grip with original wire wrapping. Scabbard is good to very good with some denting on the tip.

An excellent saber for the money that would be several hundred dollars more anywhere else.
