Description:The Ordnance Department only ordered and took delivery of 500 of these in 1849, tying it for the scarcest date of an Ames M1840 enlisted man's artillery saber. This one has a nice, shiny blade and clear markings. The scabbard has light rust, much of which could be easily cleaned. It does not have a throat which is correct for these. A D is stamped into one of the bands. The leather wrap is worn away and could be easily replaced if desired.
