Description:This signal gun is made on an exact pattern taken from an original on a dry-rotted carriage found at the old Selma Foundry in about 1960. The Selma Foundry was opened by George Peacock (CSN Foundry & Ordnance Works Commander Catesby ap R. Jone's right-hand man during the war) immediately after the war and it remained in operation until around 1970. From the new pattern 10 replicas were made in around 1963. These were the only copies available until this spring and only one changed hands that I know of in the intervening years.

The Selma Signal Gun is steel sleeved with a cast steel liner and trunnions. Welding was done by a certified welder and the guns have been "proofed" to the extent that all have been fired with 2 x 12 gauge shotgun hulls filled with Black Powder and rammed with a heavy newspaper wad. The tube is approximately 16 inches long, 4 inches diameter at the breech end, and the trunnion span is approximately 7". The bore is approximately 1.6 inches (moot since this is a SIGNAL gun only and not intended to shoot any kind of projectile). I'm guessing a weight at about 40 pounds.

The carriages are easy to make from a short length of 2x6 pine. Thru-holes are substituted for Trunnion brackets for simplicity's sake (use pieces of metal tubing the thickness of the boards for bushings).

Pyrotechnic fuze is readily available from a number of suppliers. Pyrodex works great instead of black powder. I am using the same section of broomstick my friend used when he first had the gun 45 years ago. I took the liberty of tacking some scouring pad material on one end to use for a damp bore swab. If you want to get fancy and make a bore worm find a machine shop that does engine work and beg an old valve spring from a scrap box. Any competent welder can make a worm (with one "tooth") to clear any dud loads (after proper soaking of the chamber via the vent)
