Description:Really unusual piece -- a 12pdr CS spherical case shot shell that was filled with salvaged bullets. I see at least 3 Garibaldis (one a .54) and an Enfield among the 32 bullets, 3 fuse pieces and 12 or so iron frags.
This exact piece is published in Confederate Arsenals, Laboratories and Ordnance Depots, Vol. 3 on page 986. This cam straight from the author, Dean Thomas, who acquired it for the same price it is listed for here and wanted to get his money out of it now that the (must read) book is published.
The records tell of furloughs being offered to soldiers at Petersburg who gathered 5lbs of spent lead. A high ranking Confederate officer was shot and killed while picking up spent bullets there as well. I will try to look up who it was, but he was well known.
Groundburst is displayed nicely in a cylindrical stand with a curved bottom interior the shape of a sabot to hold the pieces nicely in place without glue. A truly unique item.
