Description:A very uncommon and neat shell half, this cut away shows both a brass under plug and brass side loading plug. The under plug indicates that a Bormann fuse was used though it has deteriorated away. On these big Bormann balls the fuse was likely a 10 second variety. And while side plugs a normally associated with loading case shot they were also used to load incendiary liquid and powder. According the the D&G book this side plug was for the filling of the explosive charge of powder.
The iron on this ball is very good with a distinct mold seam. The side plug was split on saw path show it shows distinctly from the side and is less than half of the plug. The under plug shows a trace of the center hole that was to transmit the fuse ignition to the cavity. Iron is very hard and stable and in good condition.
Shell half is cleaned on the outside surface, coated and inert. The inside is flushed out but still shows the natural concretion as dug.
