Description:Confederate lead side plug for a case shot shell. As lead supplies became scarce, the Confederacy was forced to use iron shot in its case shot artillery shells. Because you cannot drill a powder chamber through iron shot, the shells had to be filled through a side hole with a dowel in the fuse hole to form the powder cavity. Afterward, the side hole was filled with a plug, which is why this is called a sideplug sometimes and the shells are called "sideloaders."
