Description:
This is a fine example of a rarity 8+ (D&G FAP rating) Sawyer shell. This is the type with the flanges that fit the guns rifling. These are only found at Port Hudson in this caliber as far as I know. Of the ones found, many have the lead peeled back due to friction on impact. This example has very good lead with no pulls or blisters. You can see just enough impact grooves on it to know it has been fired. The lead is even very good on the flanges.

The fuse is the Sawyer percussion fuse. This cap is in very good condition. As you can see in the image, it unscrews from the shell. Note that the threads of the shell for the fuse caps are in lead, not iron. This is odd and why these often lost their percussion cap. The cap has a very nice patina.

The shell was marked on the base with the patent date but after firing I can just make out the year 1855 but it is pretty clear. It is clearer than my image shows.

This is a super shell and if you like Sawyers and rare shells, this one is for you!

Note this shell is from the fantastic Bill Tracy estate collection from California.

Shell is inert and clean.
