Description:
One of the nicest shells we've had to offer, this baby Whitworth is made for the 3 pounder Whitworth rifle which has a 1.7" bore across the flats. It is about 5 3/8" tall. It is the Type-I style with the straight non-tapered tail. While these weren't found on American Civil War battlefields, they are from that period of time and earlier thus are very collectable. This example is non-battlefield and in super shape. The iron is very smooth with a dark color. A big plus of this shell is unlike most of the examples out there, this one doesn't have a shipping plug filling the hole. It has a brass percussion fuse that the owner Jack Bell informs me is the small Absterdam percussion fuse. This fuse screws out of the shell and completely disassembles quite easily. Hopefully the pictures convey how nice this rarity 9+ (according to the 1993 Dickey-George Field Artillery book) is. If you like Whitworths, don't miss this one.
Note that this shell is from the incredible collection of Jack Bell who wrote the "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance" book which is the main handbook for heavy artillery by the projectile collecting community.
Shell is inert and clean
