Description:Rarity 8 long pattern Parrott shell with the rivet in the bottom. The purpose of this rivet is debated widely. I think it is to balance the shell in flight (think like a tire balancing weight). In his book, Jack Bell conjectures it might be to remove the sand from casting the shell cavity or to plug a hole that was used to fill the shell.

Whatever the case, these are rare and desirable. This one retains its brass sabot and even has some patent writing stamped in it.

Nice shell right out of my collection.
