Description:This is a fine example of the 12 pounder late war case shot ball. The Confederacy switched to iron case to save the lead for bullets. The manufacturing process didn't allow for a powder cavity using iron balls to they changed the process to use a side hole in the shell body to accept the case balls and then filled it with a plug of either lead, iron or brass. In this case it is the lead variety.
The body on this shell is very good with only one small divot on one side that doesn't really distract at all. It will not be seen if displayed with the spot towards the back. Otherwise the rest of the shell is very appealing with smooth iron and a dark finish. The lead plug has a nice white patina unlike most. The fuse is also excellent with no dings and a nice dark patina. You can clearly see the lathe marks on the fuse. This is a great example.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
