Description:This is a very rare and desirable bolt with only a few known that still have the copper sabot. These were early war and according to Pete George originally had lead sabot but were later converted to a long skirted copper sabot. Both were usually lost when the shell was fired. These rounds are known as Burton projectiles in the 1993 D&G book and have been called Read shells in others.
This example is missing the copper sabot. You can easily see the 8 nice dimples in the ring around the bottom that secured the sabot from slipping. The iron is really good on this shell though there are two divot spots that were more likely due to poor iron than ground action as the rest of the shell is pretty good with only light peppering.
This solid shot is cleaned and coated.
