Description:This is an early pattern Hotchkiss that somehow found its way out west to the May 1863 battle of Port Gibson, MS located just south of Vicksburg. I bought this from the digger and it has ironclad provenance. This shell is before they started using threaded fuse adapters and added the flame grooves. The iron body is Vicksburg nice and the inside cavity is pretty clean as well. As you can see the shell's cup pulled off and was found in the hole just behind the shell. it will fit about 1/2 way up the cup. The sabot shows beautiful rifling from the ordnance rifle all the way around. Also of note is that you can see much of the patent date on the bottom; being the early pattern there is only the one patent date. This is a really nice fairly hard to get (rarity 9 in the 1993 D&G book) projectile.

Shell is disarmed, cleaned and coated.
