Description:This is just a super nice example of a Tennessee sabot shell that quite often is not all that good. Between the lower grade cast iron and a design that frequently lost the sabot on firing, it is hard to find a real good complete example very often. This one is quite nice.
This 3 inch shell for the Ordnance rifle is fired and the sabot shows superb 7 lands-n-groove rifling on the sabot. There is no flame groove in the shell or sabot. All three pins are present on the base and in very good condition. The square headed bolt is the longer type which went through a wooden block that was present but destroyed when fired. The shell is cast to use a wood fuse adapter and the fuse hole is quite clean. The body of the shell is nice hard iron and shows many air bubbles from the casting. There are big and small bubbles all over the shell. The ground action is just enough to show it was a dug shell. Clearly shown on both sides from top to bottom is the casting mold marks. The bourrelets are crisp and hard all around the shell. The shell is well cleaned and displays extremely well.
Shell is disarmed, cleaned and coated.
