Description:In my opinion the 30-lber Parrott was a work horse of the war. Extensively used it was big enough to pack quite the punch and mobile enough to get to the action. it crossed the lines between field artillery and siege artillery. In this case it was used to shell battery Wagner while the Confederates had it to defend the Charleston Harbor. Soon these shells would be falling in and around the city.

This example is in very good shape with nice solid iron. It was run in electrolysis for over 1.5 years. The sabot shows nearly no rifling which frequently happened on these. I dug a number in the Vicksburg area and most showed no rifling either. The fuse hole is filled with a nice white zinc fuse which shows no sign of a center hole so I feel that it is likely a percussion but can't be positive. The hole in the side is from disarming so there is no worry about that being an issue.

This really is a very nice shell for the money and is impressive when shown in a field artillery display.

Shell has been disarmed, cleaned and coated.
