Description:This is a very nice example of a great shell. While it is not shown in the Dickey and George book or the Melton and Pawl book, this is mostly due to the larger variety of Read-Parrotts out there. They are quite uncommon to find with the copper fuse and sabot.
It has so much about it that is Confederate: long copper sabot that is pre-engraved for the 10-lber Parrott rifle, nice unblemished CS copper time adapter, chipped base, lathe marks and lathe dimple.
The chipping on the base is on one side and given how good the iron is you can display showing how it chipped or turn it around and show it unchipped. However you can see a crack on the unchipped side where it almost lost some on that side and I would think then would have lost the base and sabot.
The iron is very good with no pitting and clear evidence of the lathe work done by the factory.
The sabot is a fairly thick long copper skirt style. It is the type that was cast with 3 raised areas to fit the grooves of the Parrott gun. These are known to collectors as pre-engraved.
The shell is disarmed, cleaned and coated.
