Description:I had this one listed on ebay with a few bidders and 25 or so watchers, but the nice folks at ebay yanked it so hopefully one of the bidders from there sees it here and grabs it. Ebay can lose out on their egregious fees for inconsistently halting this auction of an item which is open to the air and you can plainly see is empty. Watch out flower vase sellers because you may be next when ebay clowns randomly decide your vessel is a danger to society and must be banned. (Paint the pentagram of devil worshippers on the outside though and you'll be ok).
This shell has lead studs designed to fit in grooves of the rifle bore to give it a twist upon firing. This one is smaller than most I have seen but similar to the one on page ___ of Melton and Pawl's hardback book. They say it is from Europe but contemporaneous to our Civil War. After posting it on ebay, an archaeologist contacted me that he had dug some at Port Hudson. I can provide his contact information if desired.
