Description:This canister is reconstructed from real relics other than the top plate. The top plate is a reproduction but is extremely well done and would be hard to tell. As this plate was very thin the top plate on all canisters are hard to get in good condition because they rusted away much quicker than the bottom plate. This is a wonderful display piece. It was professionally built by the leading authority on Civil War canister, David Gotter, who has constructed many of them.

This size was intended for the 6 pounder smoothbore cannon. While common early in the war many were phased out by the end of the war. Every collection should have one of these projectiles.

This was a valuable round to have for the troops when the enemy was getting close. Without a doubt it far scarier when a soldier got close enough to the line that he had to worry about the blast of canister at short range rather than one shell.
