Description:I acquired a couple shells from The Horse Soldier at the Franklin Show that were out of a very old collection and the actual shells photographed for the Dickey and George book. These opportunities hardly ever arise because most of the Tom Dickey shells are in the Atlanta History Museum or Steve Phillips' collection (he was able to buy ones he wanted from Tom's widow). This and a couple others came out to a collector through legitimate means, but there are only a handful of them. To cap it off, this is a particularly rare and desirable shell.
This sabot system quite frankly sucked and this one is torn in half from firing. I had a mint one of these shells with no sabot at all and I upgraded to one with iron similar to this one but a complete, albeit pulled, sabot. I knew I would never come across a sabot for the mint example. I paid well over a grand for each of those, by the way.
