Description:The Delafield is a war time contract shell that was made for the Delafield rifles. I was developed by Lt. Colonel Richard Delafield, Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, for a cannon he also devised. They are not known to have been used during a battle although 13 of the cannon and their shells were delivered to the state of New York in March of 1862. These shells use the Parrott fuse and most of the shell looks like a Parrott. The difference is the base is cast without a sabot but instead with an integral cup of malleable iron that has 5 raised tabs shaped like an arrow that fit the rifling of the 20-lber Delafield gun.
After the war these were popular shells to use on monuments at national parks, cemeteries, etc. Nearly all have light surface pitting from being outside for many ears. This one is no exception but the pitting is very light and it is in better than average condition and has a great look. What makes this one extra nice is that it has the fuse still in it. Most are missing the fuse.
Additionally there is an old painted while label with black painted lettering on the front that says:
UNION RIFLED GUN
PARROTT
20.pdr. 3.3
PRE-ENGRAVED
SABOT
SHELLS
It has a nice yellow color to the white paint showing that it is a very old painted label and I would imagine from a GAR post or similar.
A very neat shell at a very good price. Shell is disarmed, cleaned and coated.
