Description:Obviously an American Civil War period shell from the patent date on the sabot is not believed to have seen any war use. The 1993 Dickey and George book reports that one was found at the West Point test range. Many of these came from Gettysburg where they were once part of the displays and then sold as surplus years ago. Likely some were in Bannerman's surplus as well.
This shell is in excellent condition; far better than most. The sabot is stamped "Patent Feb. 28, 1864" and the side of the shell body is stamped "JPK". Iron is quite slick. The brass sabot has six cuts in it to aid in expansion into the rifling. The fuse hole is empty as nearly all are.
This is a nice late war projectile example and most advanced collections have one.
