Description:These are pretty hard to get and very hard to get in good condition. The Field Artillery Projectiles book by Dickey and George list it as a rarity 9.
This round was designed to bust up trenches, cannon and fortifications. Parrott provided a bolt in this caliber in both the flat top and bottle nose style. I know this bottle nose style to be fired at Little Kennesaw Mountain and the Cheatham Hill lines here in Marietta. In both places here were lots of cannon.
The iron is in excellent condition being nearly slick as you can see from the photos. There is some chipping inside the sabot on the base that I presume is from the force of being fired. But the nice sabot held and is still in place with a slight mushrooming on one side. Of neat interest is something from the manufacture that can be seen in the 2nd image. There was a casting chip or air bubble near the base and when the sabot was cast on the shell you can see where the brass ran into the open void and extends at least a half inch up the shell. This example is a great piece.
This Parrott has been cleaned and coated.
