Description:A nice early recovery of a Hotchkiss bolt that we know was dug before 1968 as it is pictured on page 103 of the ground breaking book "Field Artillery Projectiles of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Sidney Kerksis and Thomas Dickey. The book lists it as being for a 3.5 Blakely rifle but given the base cup diameter of 3.55-inch it is either for a 3.6-inch or 3.67-inch gun.
The iron is quite good but has never been cleaned other than perhaps with a brush. It was then coated with what I presume to be polyurethane as it hasn't yellowed after all these years. It also isn't a heavy coating unlike what you often see on early shells.
This would be a very neat documented shell from a seminal book to add to one's collection. It is one which I'd keep except that I already have a couple I found.
Update: This bolt is also shown on page 135 of George Witham's book on Shiloh Artillery.
