Description:Here is a great example of the bourrelet Virginia style Read. It has two good traits valued by collectors:
1) Very good 7x7 rifling from the ordnance rifle on a sabot with no shell base chipping
2) A lathe lug still present as most are broken off with just faint evidence they existed
The iron is in very good condition with only the slightest of ground action. Both raised rings (bourrelets) are very prominent and in great condition. The fuse hole for the wooden fuse adapter (missing) is fairly clean. It's a great shell but a little TLC could make this shell display even better.
Shell is cleaned, coated and disarmed.
Pete George told me that the sabot is of a type associated with early 1863 Reads found at places like Chancellorsville. I cannot see the flame groove cut he saw to make this call, but he knows a lot more than me about Read shells and so I defer to him.
