Description: Brass fuse adapter for US Hotchkiss case shot shell. In the case shot type for Hotchkiss shells the powder chamber is in the very bottom of the shell, underneath a pusher plate. This means the fuse adapter has to be long and even still it was connected to a hole in the pusher plate by an iron tube. The effect of the blast blew the pusher plate toward the nose of the shell, propelling the case shot balls out forward of its arc of flight. See the picture of the "naturally sectioned" shell on the right (one on left is a common shell that didn't have any case shot balls inside). This novel engineering is still used today in modern artillery shells. This one has some dings from usage. Recovered in the Atlanta Campaigh area. Just the fuse, not the nose sections.
